[b]Neil:[/b] In this Real English programme we'll be looking at an English idiom.

[b]Yang Li:[/b] 和对应的汉语成语。

[b]Neil:[/b] Today's English idiom is 'money doesn't grow on trees'.

[b]Yang Li:[/b] 什么意思呢？

[b]Neil:[/b] Well this idiom is used to say that something, for example, money, is not freely available.

[b]Yang Li:[/b] 某样东西，比如金钱，是不会唾手可得的。


[b]Neil:[/b] Money doesn't grow on trees.

[b]Yang Li:[/b] 字面意思是钱不会从树上长出来。

[b]Neil:[/b] Do you have an equivalent idiom in Chinese?

[b]Yang Li:[/b] 当然了，这就相当于汉语中的天上不会掉馅儿饼。

[b]Neil:[/b] Let's hear some examples of people using this idiom in conversation.

[i]A: Mum, can I have thirty quid (£30) to go shopping? I want to buy some new jeans.[/i]
[i]B: No you can't! You've got lots of jeans already, and money doesn't grow on trees, you know![/i]
[i]C: I really want a new computer but I'm going to have to save up. They don't grow on trees, do they?[/i]

[b]Yang Li:[/b] 以上第一段对话中母亲对孩子说，你已经有很多牛仔裤了，不能再花钱买了，因为天上不会掉馅饼的。

[b]Neil:[/b] Money doesn't grow on trees.

[b]Yang Li:[/b] 第二段是自言自语的独白，我真想买台新电脑啊，不过，天上不会掉馅饼，我要攒钱才是。

[b]Neil:[/b] They don't grow on trees, do they?

[b]Yang Li:[/b] 说话人当然知道，树上不长钱，只不过是要表达钱来之不易的道理。

[b]Neil:[/b] This idiom is usually used to talk about money, but can sometimes be used to talk about other things too. So to recap the English idiom is 'money doesn't grow on trees'.
