ysun 4/4/2007 11:49
ysun 4/4/2007 11:54

I was told by my lecturer in Dundee that Overgate and Wellgate used to be the names of city gates. Is there any way to find out if that is true?

Milne's tobacco factory was long gone. The shops below included James T. G. Millar, the hat manufacturer, and Alexander S. Wallace, a wines and spirits merchant. Millar had other shops at No. 104 Hawkhill and No. 21 Overgate.

Alexander Wilson, who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.

William Menzies was the name of the drapery in Albion House, No. 40 Nethergate. The Metropole Restaurant was part of Russell's Royal Hotel, though it is listed as No. 1 Union Street. The hotel was managed in 1905 by A. J. Hitchman."BW%` a

James Stewart the hairdresser was at No. 7 Union Street. No. 52 Nethergate, just beyond the hotel in this photograph, was Richard McCormack, a jeweller dealing in watches and imported jewellery. He lived at No. 93 Nethergate.

The only recognisable business in this photograph is James Cunningham, the bookseller, whose shop stood on the north side of Dundee's Murraygate at No. 36. His full listing in the Dundee Directory adds 'stationer and newsagent'.s1m\+[N$jdq

He had another shop at No. 1 Cowgate, a warehouse at No. 23 Murraygate and he lived at No. 1 Commercial Street (the south end near the docks). The large banner for William Smart is most likely a brand advertisement in Alexander Heggie's clothier's shop.

Other businesses listed in the Dundee Directory include James McKenzies (smallwares) at No. 32, The Singer Manufacturing Co (extreme left?); in the opposite direction, No. 40 was William Black, ironmonger, No. 42 James Brodie, horse-hirer.
